After initially aspiring to a career in physiological, especially animal, chemistry, Berzelius shifted his interests toward inorganic chemistry , the field in which he made his chief contributions. Berzelius is often credited with the discovery of catalysis in 1836 – indeed he coined the term. But even chemists who have spent time arguing in long papers about whether the discovery was made by Humphry Davy in 1817 or by Charles Désormes and Nicolas Clément in 1806, seem never to have heard of Elizabeth Fulhame. Jons Jakob Berzelius Awardisorganized by International Agency fo This paper explores the social and intellectual contexts for scientific discovery, by examining the lives of two scientists who greatly contributed to the chemistry of selenium: Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848), who discovered selenium as a new chemical element in 1817; and Thressa C. Stadtman (1920-2016), who demonstrated that selenium is an essential constituent of several enzymes in This excited passage in an 1828 letter from Wohler to Berzelius remains one of the most often repeated quotations in the history of chemistry.

Jacob berzelius contribution to chemistry

Berzelius’s final contribution to the chemistry of platinum and its allied metals lay in a rather different quarter. In his annual report to the Swedish Academy of Sciences for 1835 he reviewed some of the results of earlier workers, including Davy and Thenard, on chemical changes occurring in the presence The Swede Jöns Jacob Berzelius describes a catalyst as a substance which can breathe life into slumbering chemical reactions.
